The first of the above, by Paul Lashmar and Yvonne Ndege, was published in the London newspaper The Independent on January 14, 2000. My apologies for the scan being so small. If you open it in Firefox or Opera you can enlarge it. I opened it using Paint, in which it can be enlarged considerably while still being legible.
The second article is by Paul Bradley writing for the Richmond Times-Dispatch of Virginia, November 23, 2004, page B-1. The original has long been removed from the Internet; I found the PDF on the website of a law firm.
Both articles relate to fraudulent asylum claims, note the first one, about the London firm Malik Law Associates:
The firm’s clients were also offered coaching in invented stories to claim to the Home Office that they suffered rape, physical violence and had seen their families murdered.
And the second article:
Investigators found, however, that the applications were filled out in boilerplate fashion. Fourteen applications, for example, used almost word-for-word language claiming clients were raped by taxi drivers, court papers said. Eleven of those asylum applications were approved...Applications also included fabricated birth certificates, baptismal certificates and police reports, court papers said.
There have been a number of successful prosecutions for these types of scams, which can also be found in Canada, Australasia, and many European countries.
The most outrageous, certainly the most large scale, legal fraud in this database, is the scam pulled by another UK firm, Leigh Day. Believe women, yeah right. Believe lawyers too?
