This is an excellent article written from an American perspective by a bloke who has more letters after his name than the alphabet. Of his many observations, these two stand out:
most genuine victims report directly to the police
most genuine victims have injuries that are consistent with real violence while those who inflict injuries on themselves do not generally do a good job of it.
A corollary of the second point is that most genuine victims suffer injuries because they fight back.
