The girl who cried wolf: Nafissatou Diallo scored a strange but far from unique double whammy, becoming first a false rape accuser and then a bona fide sexual assault victim.
Although this attack almost certainly happened, on August 22 the District Attorney’s office files for discontinuance because Diallo had repeatedly undermined her credibility by lying to the authorities. Among those lies was the claim that she had been gang-raped by soldiers in her native Guinea, a claim she was said to have made with “great emotion and conviction”.
